The Hoover Dam: an important cultural landmark

Herbert Hoover has the sad misfortune of being remembered as the President in office at the time of the Wall Street Crash, and the ensuing onset of the Great Depression. However, he has achieved a lasting legacy in the Hoover Dam; also known as the Boulder Dam, the Hoover Dam is often called “a modern civil engineering wonder” and is still one of the most exciting attractions for tourists to visit in America. Located on the edge of Nevada and Arizona, the Hoover Dam was first commissioned in 1922, when Herbert Hoover was Secretary of Commerce under Warren Harding, but construction only began in 1931, and by then it was integral to Hoover’s scheme to create more jobs during the depression. Building continued under President Roosevelt from 1933, and the Hoover Dam was finally completed in 1936, 2 years ahead of schedule, and cost million (6 million today) to build.



The issues that arose during the construction of the Hoover Dam seem to be somehow symptomatic of popular trends in American cultural history, in that it had two main themes running through it: that is the role of the worker, and the treatment of African Americans. Working at the Hoover Dam was dangerous work, with dam workers often working 7 days a week and at risk from all forms of hazards, including carbon monoxide poisoning, dehydration, heat prostration, and possible electrocution from misplaced electrical lines.



Tensions between the workers and the dam’s construction company – Six Companies – reached a breaking point in 1931 when several workers were forced to accept pay cuts. Within hours of this announcement, the entire workforce declared a strike; among their demands, they listed the provision of clean, flushing toilets and the ready availability of iced water. When the workers eventually returned to the dam site, defeated, there were efforts made by the company to improve lighting and water provision, and no more pay cuts were made for the duration of construction: a minor victory, despite the failure of the strike.



Similarly, the construction of the Hoover Dam exposed the pressures on unemployed African American workers during the depression. When none of the first 1000 workers placed on the Six Companies payroll in 1931 were African American, the Colored Citizens Labor and Protective Association of Las Vegas issued a complaint. As pressure mounted, Six Companies President W.A. Bechtel promised an increase in black workers hired, but by 1933, only 24 dam workers were African American. Additionally, African American workers were made to work in the toughest conditions, while being made to travel on segregated buses and drink from separate water buckets.



The significance of the Hoover Dam in American cultural history, therefore, does not just lie in its spectacular views and the power it harnessed for the benefit of American citizens; it is also important to remember the history of its construction and its status as an example of the plight of workers, both white and black Americans, during the depression years. Today, the Hoover Dam attracts 8 to 10 million visitors a year and, with many comfortable hotels located nearby as well as the thrilling sights and sounds of Las Vegas, there is no reason not to visit such a major site in American history.

Includes a Champagne toast, light lunch, and plenty of exploration time. This package’s most popular upgrade is river rafting, which involves taking a pontoon boat down the Colorado River.

Then there’s the Grand Canyon Skywalk. In the last three or so years, this attraction has become the buzz of Vegas. The “glass bridge” lets you walk 70 feet past the edge and suspends you 4,000 feet above the river. This super glass cost 0,000 a pop and enables you to experience what is being billed as “gravity-defying” views.

South Rim

This is the most famous area of the canyon and probably the most photographed. By car, it’s a four-hour trip from Phoenix and a two-hour trip from Sedona. From Las Vegas, you’ll have to take a 5.5-hour bus tour or a 45-minute airplane flight (recommended).

Visitors starting from Arizona are advised to drive to Grand Canyon Airport (GCA) and check in for their flight. For Las Vegas-based travelers, you will need to either purchase a bus/helicopter package or an airplane/helicopter package.

Papillon’s heli tours leave from GCA and bolt at 200 mph over the Kaibab Plateau before entering the Dragoon Corridor, the widest, deepest section of the canyon. The flight turns back at the North Rim. All in all, I’m estimating that a helicopter ride shows you in 30 minutes what would take days on foot.

Sightseeing – Denver Style

Denver Colorado, a one time well known cow town, has grown up over the 80′s and has grown to become the metropolitan city between the Mississippi and Las Vegas. It is home to several professional league sports teams; basketball, baseball, football, hockey and soccer. It has a huge convention center that host national and international conventions and a large multiplex performing arts center that hosts many of the traveling Broadway plays, such as Wicked which has performed over several tours.

So what is a visitor to Denver going to do to get the most out of the city? There is culture and nightlife and a host of other activities that one can partake in no matter what season it is.

The most obvious activity in the wintertime is skiing. A visitor can take quickly take the I-70 West into the mountains and be at some of the major ski resorts in Colorado within 60 minutes. While the ski resorts are outside of Denver, most of the ski destinations on the Front Range area start from Denver. Some of the closest resorts are Loveland and Keystone. Eldora is a hop, skip and a jump from Boulder, a city close to Denver.

There are also some specialized museums and homes of famous people that are located in Denver. The famous Brown Palace Hotel, a place made famous by the celebrity guests over the years from the Unsinkable Molly Brown to the Beatles and President Clinton. If you can get a reservation, it is an experience to have High Tea in their main dining room.

One of the many famous annual events that takes place every January is the National Western Stock show which was first held in 1906. You can catch this multi-day event at the National Western Complex. It is the world’s largest stock show and is used to preserve the western lifestyle by providing a showcase for the agricultural industry.

If you are in Denver over the 4th of July weekend, you can experience the annual Cherry Creek art festival. This is an outdoor art festival that celebrates the visual, culinary and performance arts. There are many places in Denver to experience and many events that give the visitor a unique flavor of the area. Denver has gone from boom to bust to boom and in all that time it has grown to adapt with the times yet still maintain a hold on its unique roots.
