There is nothing like combining business with pleasure. This week’s blog post mingles the two subjects and notes the advantages of being a small business owner when it comes to vacations.

The subject springs to mind because, well, that is what we are in the process of doing right now. My husband, Michael, was offered a one month job with hourly pay that we couldn’t turn down. The client offered to pay for fuel, hotels, and /day for food, along with paying for the work to be done. How could we turn that down? We packed our bags and left town for the next month.

We are in an intriguing position because we are subcontracting to his business, rather than simply making a bid for a job. The difference, of course, is that generally as a small business owner, you are expected to pay for your own accomodations, travel, and food, though your bill may reflect accordingly. Still, the basic plot twist remains the same. As a small business owner, you are given more flexibility in your contacts and your hours.

For instance, suppose you legitimately – and I stress legitimately – wanted to expand your business to Hawaii. You needed to go out and make the appropriate contacts (I stress ‘needed’, as well). The opportunity arises in your work schedule for you to stay an extra day or two, or perhaps conduct your business in the daytime and make the most of the evenings (or even, vacation in the daytime and attend various social functions at night). By the same token, I know a man who attended a national conference each year in Las Vegas. He took the opportunity to fly his family there, as well, and made the most of the time away from home.

There is good reason to stress the ‘legitimately’ portion of the statement. As a small business owner, you will be more likely already to attract your friendly neighborhood IRS auditor to your accounts. You want to make sure that all of the numbers come up squeaky clean.

Some things that might pass the muster:

Flying yourself and your employees on a trip to a conference or meeting of some sort

Limited food allowance – the IRS no longer allows you to deduct full meals and sets limits. Make sure you check the updated information

Billing long distance calls made to your office

Reasonable trips that are necessary to the life and growth of your company

Things that will most likely upset the IRS:

Listing your wife and your 3 month old child as an employee. If they really are (perhaps your baby models for ads for your company?), make sure that position needs to attend said meeting. If you are using it to shoot more ads and need your baby model, fine. If you’re not, and just want to bring the kids, don’t try to deduct them.

All that glitters certainly looks to be Gold in the 2006 World Series of Poker’s ,000 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em event at Harrah’s off-Strip Rio Hotel and Casino.

Jamie Gold, a California TV producer and talent agent, kept a tight grip on first Tuesday as the record field was sliced from 27 to Thursday’s Final Table of nine, more than doubling the chip count of his closest competitor, well-known pro and two-two-time gold bracelet winner Allen Cunningham, at one point.

Gold had more than 35 million chips at the time, but saw his stack dwindle as play proceded.

Action began at noon and progressed slowly after the first half of the remaining hopefuls had been eliminated as players tenaciously battled for the last nine coveted slots.

Play finally ended about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday when Fred Goldberg went all-in from the cutoff of .8 million.

Richard Lee called in the small blind and showed the kings; Goldberg displayed the queen of hearts and 3 of spades.

The board came 9 of hearts, 7 of hearts, 7 of clubs, jack of spades and 8 of clubs.

The nine players from last year’s Final Table all had busted out before Tuesday play began, with defending champion Joe Hachem winding up 99th.

The 2006 WSOP Texas No-Limit Hold’em finalists, hometowns and chip totals are Gold, Malibi, Calif., 26,000,000; Cunningham, Las Vegas, 17,700,000; Erik Friberg, Stockholm, Sweden, 9,725,000; Lee, San Antonio, 8,745,000; Paul Wasicka, Westminster, Conn., 8,050,000; Doug Kim, Hartsdale, N.Y., 6,500,000; Rhett Butler, Rockville, Md., 5,000,000; Michael Binger, Atherton, Calif., 3,320; and Dan Nassif, St. Louis, 2,840,000.

The last dozen contenders each were guaranteed at least .1 million.

They will compete for a million top prize.

The 10th, 11th and 12th-place contestants earned ,154,572 apiece.

They were Goldberg, Lief Force and John Magill.

The 13, 14th and 15th place finishers each received 7,128.

They included William Thorsson, Luke Chung and Kevin Aaronson.

Notable pro Jeffrey Lisandro was eliminated in 17th, just behind David Einhorn.

Each took home 9,730.

Einhorn, the Rye, N.Y., investment firm emploee who began Tuesday as the third highest chip holder and had pledged to donate his winnings to actor Michael J. Fox’s Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, busted out in 18th place.

Parkinson’s Disease was responsible for his grandfather’s death.

The WSOP is running a day ahead of schedule as the original field of 8,773 was pared much quicker than anticipated, setting up an unprecedented dark day on Wednesday, the eve of the finals.

Registration for a simultaneous ,500 buy-in No-Limit event fell considerably as players began heading home after extended Las Vegas stays.

The Monday-Tuesday tourney drew one of the smalllest fields in the six-week poker extravaganza, just 362 players.

James Mitchell beat Stuart Fox in heads-up action and won 3,173 from the 4,130 purse.

Though only rated 2-stars it is a comfortable hotel and visitors spend most of their time on the mountain anyway. Save extra money by purchasing your lift tickets online.

Many options are available to the travelling family during holiday time. Families can visit Disney parks on the East and West coasts and a family-themed Las Vegas. Taking a ski trip to the mountains of Colorado is an excellent idea also.

Most players consider Stu Ungar to be the best poker player in history. His legend is considerable: he was born to a loan shark and was playing gin rummy professionally in New York by the age of 12. The first time he played No Limit Texas Hold’em was in 1980 in the WSOP Main Event – he would win the event besting Doyle Brunson heads-up. He won the tournament again the next year. During the 1980s the world’s most prestigious poker tournament was Amarillo Slim’s Super Bowl of Poker, which Ungar won 3 times. He is estimated to have bought into 30 ,000 or higher buy-in tournaments in his life – he won 10 of them, and he is reportedly the reason why Las Vegas casinos no longer offer the same odds on single deck blackjack. When casino owner Bob Stupak watched Stu play blackjack he challenged the brash young card counter by betting him 0,000 that Stu could not count down (name every card before it comes) the last 3 decks of a 6 deck blackjack shoe – Stu won the bet. His lifetime tournament winnings are around ,000,000. He tipped cab drivers and dealers alike upwards of ,000 for ten minutes of work. By 1993, Stu Ungar had consumed so much cocaine that his nose had collapsed.

Stu had always had a problem with binge drinking and drugs, dating back to his early days in gin rummy. But most spectators either couldn’t see past the eternally boyish features he possessed or stood slack-jawed in awe of his preternatural ability with cards. Only a few of his closest friends ever tried to get “The Kid” into treatment. Mike Sexton who was as close with Stu as any one, tried on a number of occasions to get him into rehab. Stu always declined saying that rehab was only a way to get more drugs.
In 1990, Stu found himself once again as the chip leader going into day 3 of the WSOP Main Event. But a midnight cocaine overdose left him unconscious on his hotel floor and he would not show up to play the next day. However, Stu had possessed such a commanding chip lead that even though he never played and was eliminated through forced blinds and antes, he still finished in 9th place.

By 1997, Stu had lost everything. He was broke, he was separated from his daughter and then ex-wife and his collapsed nose had left him with a jack-o-lantern countenance. Ashamed, he would stay in hotels for months on end.

In the summer of 1997, friend and fellow poker pro, Billy Baxter found Ungar stalking the halls of Binion’s Horseshoe casino, campaigning for someone to stake him the ,000 buy in for the Main Event. Bill would stake Stu with the ,000 buy-in to the 1997 WSOP Main Event in exchange for half of whatever Stu won. He was the last person added to the tournament that year, buying in minutes before the tournament began.

It would be for his daughter Stefanie that Stu donned a pair of John Lennon sunglasses, wore them halfway down his face and entered the 1997 WSOP Main Event. He had not won a WSOP event in 14 years and it had been 16 since his last Main Event victory.

Halfway through the first day, Mike Sexton found Stu asleep at a table with the game passing him by. Sexton awoke his friend, and along with Baxter took him aside and gave him an impassioned tongue-lashing. While what was said in that famous castigation has never been revealed, but from that point on Stu would keep a picture of his daughter in his hand.

All of a sudden, it was as if no time had passed between the 1997 and 1981 Main Events. Stu came back to the table as his old self, confident and ferocious. He stormed the field and 3 days later, when the final deuce hit the river, Stu had done it – he had won the 1997 WSOP Main Event. He immediately took out his picture of Stefanie and showed it to the camera so the world could once again see his daughter.

Stu would skip the 1998 WSOP, explaining that he was too tired from the previous week’s binge. A few months later, Stu Ungar, the only man to win the WSOP Main Event outright three times, would be found dead in his hotel room, face down with 0 in his pocket. He was 45 years old.

I hate internet poker. I know that it is often rigged even at the highest levels (Absolute Poker and 2007 WCOOP.)
