The Bank West of Nevada monorail departs the Flamingo station in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Las Vegas Monorail is a privately owned and operated public transit system that opened in 2004 behind several casinos on the east side of The Strip (Las Vegas Boulevard). The line is short (less than 4 miles), but will hopefully expand to the McCarran airport. Bombardier Transportation provides the vehicles and signaling while several other companies (including one now part of Jacobs Engineering) built the stations and track based on the ALWEG track design (also used at Disneyland and Walt Disney World). Getting around Las Vegas on your holiday

Article by Paul Buchanan

For decades, Hollywood films have portrayed Las Vegas as the epitome of glitz and glamour. From 1960′s Ocean’s Eleven with Frank Sinatra to recent comedy hit The Hangover, Las Vegas is portrayed as a place that oozes carefree pleasure and the ideal destination for escaping the woes of everyday life. What these movies usually don’t show, however, is how congested the city can get – particularly at peak tourist seasons or when its hotels play host to large conference gatherings. Indeed, for newcomers, travelling from place to place in the city can be one of the most difficult things about holidays in Las Vegas. If you’re planning your first trip to the entertainment capital of the world, here’s a quick guide to getting around.

For starters, walking is usually best avoided in the summer. During these months, temperatures in Las Vegas can reach nearly 40 degrees Celsius so even walking a short distance may be very uncomfortable. Moreover, while it is possible to hire taxis along the Las Vegas Strip, the primary tourist focus of the city, severe congestion can mean high fares and unreasonably long journey times, and driving in your own car is likely to be equally frustrating.

Luckily, the city’s main hotels are usually connected to each other by bridge or underground tunnel so visitors need never have to leave the air conditioned comfort provided indoors. Alternatively, the monorail also provides a simple and effective way to travel between major hotels and currently runs from the Saraha Hotel and Casino to the world-famous MGM Grand. Plans are in motion to extend the monorail further to McCarran International Airport and this expansion is expected to be completed in 2012.

Travelling along the Las Vegas Strip, then, is relatively simple and most tourists in the city are unlikely to leave this compact area. However, holidaymakers who want to explore the surrounding sights – which include the amazing Grand Canyon – will need to plan ahead. If you’re driving your own vehicle to Las Vegas, most hotels offer free parking so you’ll be able to park your car until you want to leave the Strip. Alternatively, if you’re flying straight to Las Vegas, car rental at McCarran International Airport is readily available, affordable and by far the easiest way to visit the attractions outside the city.

International tourists hoping to embark on lengthy sightseeing trips outside the city may even wish to contact groups that organise holidays in Las Vegas in order to simplify their travel plans. This may be particularly useful if you’re travelling in a big group, with children, or you simply don’t want the responsibility of driving during your holiday.
