This video is of the new .2 Billion development on Las Vegas Boulevard named City Center. Located between Bellagio and Monte Carlo resorts, CityCenter will feature ARIA, a soaring 61-story, 4004-room gaming resort; non-gaming luxury hotels including Vdara Hotel and Las Vegas first Mandarin Oriental; Veer Towers, the developments only strictly residential buildings; approximately 2400 condominium residences; a million Public Fine Art Program; and Crystals, a 500000-square-foot retail and entertainment district. Additionally, The Harmon, a luxury 400-room boutique hotel, is anticipated to open at CityCenter in late 2010.

The Turkmen president says it is his country’s answer to Las Vegas. Using the country’s copious revenues from oil and natural gas, Awaza is Turkmenistan’s multi-billion-dollar beach resort project aimed at attracting foreign tourists to the Caspian Sea coast. But as Robin Forestier-Walker reports, the luxury fleet of hotels has not yet benefited ordinary Turkmens – a third of whom live in poverty.

In its prime, the north end of the Strip — the home to casinos such as the Thunderbird, Silver Slipper and Stardust — defined Vegas glitz. This stretch of the Strip was the stamping grounds for the likes of the Rat Pack, Elizabeth Taylor and Liberace. Today’s snapshot is a much different picture. Empty plots of land mark half-completed dreams, where old hotels were razed to make room for billion-dollar luxury resorts that never materialized.
