Las Vegas is still America’s Playground and Sin City. The city is regarded as a heavy weight for fun and excitement. In addition, it keeps an international pop cultural reputation that still far exceeds its Asian counterpart, because of sports events, movies, concerts, circuses, and big conventions to name a few. Water features and wall fountains – From Versailles to Las Vegas the water fountain endures

Article by Tim Bridges

From the stately and regal formality of the gardens of the Palace of Versailles to the garish Bellagio Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, the two places could not be more different if one wanted them to be, and yet these two dramatically differing places have one thing in common; both have water fountains and features as an integral element in their design and ultimate finish.

The latter is a modern miracle of water feature opulence and is rightly known the world over, as too is the more formal, classical fountains and no less grand water features of the former, and between them the other element they have in common is that people cannot just walk on by; indeed people will sit, stand or mill around watching and listening to the entirely different spectacular displays of moving water.
Versailles, like many more ancient sites and buildings has an eclectic mix of indoor fountains, outdoor fountains and wall fountains and in contrast to modern buildings, the water features in place were a distinct signature and loud advertising of the raised social statues of the owner and builder.

In centuries past, water fountains were purely functional; however, as building methods improved and architects designed ever more elaborate and larger public buildings and private residences, the heyday of the water feature was in the time of the Roman Empire, when anyone of any status would use water features as a declaration of that status. Indoor and outdoor, wall mounted and/or free standing, decorated with bronze and stone effigies of gods, animals and creatures of myth, the water fountains found in the Roman Empire were indeed things of great beauty.

However, unlike modern fountains and features, they were consider purely functional affairs, merely a way of delivering a supply of water for cooking, drinking and bathing without the need to carry heavy pots laden with water from natural springs of streams. By harnessing and manipulating water as the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans did it was one of the big steps in our evolution to becoming the modern civilization that we are; without having a means to manipulate, move, store and clean water as we do now, our civilization would be limited to outposts where there was an adequate supply of drinking water.
