All the beautiful casinos on the Southern end of the Las Vegas Strip. MGM Grand, the New York New York, the Excalibur, the magnificient Mandalay bay and finally Luxor. Luxor is the second largest hotel in Las Vegas (the largest being the MGM Grand Las Vegas) and the third largest in the world. We were there on the opening week end in 1993. When the resort opened, it featured the Nile River Tour which was a river ride that carried guests to different parts of the pyramid and passed by pieces of ancient artwork on a river that encircled the casino. The casino also featured King Tut’s Tomb and Museum, a duplicate of King Tutankhamen’s tomb as found in the Valley of the Kings near Luxor, Egypt. In July 2007, owner MGM Resorts International announced plans to thoroughly renovate the Luxor, spending 0 million to remodel 80 percent of Luxor’s public areas, removing much of the ancient Egyptian theme and replacing it with more adult-oriented and modern lounges, restaurants and clubs. The laser show in front of the Sphinx and the laser beam shooting out of the Sphinx eyes were phenomenal, I had made movie footages of the laser shows but they were so low res that it was not worth attaching to this high definition video. The Great Sphinx of Giza and the phenomenal Luxor Sky Beam (The Luxor Lightbeam) appear in many (if not all) images of Las Vegas, from films to Computer Games.

The morning of the big welterweight fight between champion Manny Pacquiao and contender “Sugar” Shane Mosley they held a mass at the Mandalay Bay resort hotel and I was lucky enough to attend. Unlike past years when the mass was held simply in Manny’s hotel room, this time it was held at one of the big ballrooms at Mandalay Bay to accomodate al the people and well-wishers that attended. In addition to Manny Pacquiao, many other celebrities were in attendance that morning, including former Manila mayor Lito Atienza, Ilocos Sur governor Chavit Singson, ABS-CBN sports reporter Dyan Castillejo, Vicky Belo, Hayden Kho and many more!

Hoover Dam of Las Vegas

With all the fun things to do in the Sin City, we begin to think of the water and energy source. Millions of tourist comes to Las Vegas for conventions, parties, weddings, shows, shops, concerts, and casinos. It will take a lot of water and energy resource to satisfy the tourists. Thanks to Hoover Dam. We get to enjoy all the fun things in the city.

With its massive size, Hoover Dam became one of the major attractions in Las Vegas. Located at South Nevada, the dam collects some of the fresh water from Colorado River which runs between Nevada and Arizona. There is enough river water to create two great lakes namely Lake Mead and Lake Mohave.

The dam provides precious water and clean energy to Sin City including Las Vegas Hotels, shops, and restaurants. In fact, the engineers deployed seventeen hydroelectric power turbines on the main power station. The turbines generate 4.2 billion kilowatt-hours of clean energy.

In 1900, the engineers looked at Black and Boulder Canyon to develop a dam to control the floods, irrigate the farmlands, provide some water, and produce the hydroelectricity. Hence, the dam was once called Boulder Dam. Later, the dam was named in respect of President Herbert Hoover.

In 1928, the Congress gave the go ahead signal to start the construction of the massive dam. After a few years of planning, the project started in 1931 which coincided with the Great Depression. Thousands of workers worked diligently with the ambitious project. Sadly, the project claimed more than one hundred lives. Amazingly, the Six Companies who build the dam finished the project in March 1, 1936. That is two years ahead of schedule.

Many hailed the dam as one of the greatest engineering feats of all time. The dam stands seven hundred twenty six feet and covers one thousand two hundred forty four feet in length. The structure uses a concrete arch-gravity principle. The dam curves upstream in a narrowing curve that directs the weight of the water to push down with the gravitational force.

If you are planning to go to Hoover Dam without joining any tour, there are two ways to get to the dam from your Las Vegas Hotels. From the North of Las Vegas, you head north on I-15. Turn right on US 93/95. Prepare to look for Spaghetti Bowl Interchange. Get on Phoenix.

From South of Las Vegas, you head south on I-15. After you pass the Mandalay Bay, you head south on 215. Take the turnoff on Henderson and McCarran Airport.

The freeway will take you out of Las Vegas through the Railroad Pass. It is pretty close to the Boulder City. From the city, you can follow the signs and go on first turn to Hoover Dam. Or, you can take the route to the scenic and historic city. The route also takes you to the Hoover Dam.

On the Hoover Dam reception lobby, the tourists can purchase dam tour tickets. The tour guide will explain how the dam was built. Then, you get to see the power generators. After, you get to take an elevator ride on a five hundred feet descend down the dam.
