Entry from: Las Vegas, United States Entry Title: “What happens in Vegas….” Entry: “… ends up on this blog. Before I hit Sin City, I stopped off at Hoover Dam. I had completely forgotten about this Wonder of the Modern World until I looked at the map an realised I could go see it on my way to Vegas. I’ll be honest, it wasn’t as big as I was expecting. When seen on TV it looks gi-norma-gantuan. In real life it’s only ma-jassive. Some people might say these aren’t even real words, but I tend to ignore these people. Now, don’t get me wrong, it’s fecking huge, I couldn’t fit it in to one photograph no matter where I stood, but I guess the Grand Canyon earlier that day had redifined my meaning of big. Now, onto Las Vegas. I didn’t really like it, and I know why I didn’t like it. Three reasons; 1) I was skint. 2) I was alone. 3) I was alone and skint. If I had money, then at least there was something to do, and if I was with someone, then at least I would’ve had company, but to be without either just sucked because there’s really not much to do in Vegas without money. And it’s very sleezy. Even more so than Amsterdam or Bangkok. I did manage to get half price tickets to a Las Vegas show. It may have been the cheapest show on the Strip, but it had the best name. Enjoying the outdoors on your Las Vegas holidays – outdoor activities and places to visit outside of Las Vegas
Article by Ashley GIlmour
The majority of tourists on their Las Vegas holidays never stray far from the Strip, but for those that are prepared to venture further afield, there are a wealth of activities for the more adventurous traveller and some beautiful and inspiring landscapes that are well worth taking the time to visit.
The most famous location that you can visit from Las Vegas is The Grand Canyon, one of the natural wonders of the world and an absolute must-see attraction. The easiest way to see this extraordinary landscape is on a helicopter or aeroplane tour using one of the numerous flight-tour companies operating out of Las Vegas. The concierge at your hotel will be able to arrange this for you although in the peak summer months it may be advisable to book this tour in advance with your travel agent due to the popularity of these trips. Most flights, in addition to offering you a breathtaking view of the Grand Canyon, also include the Hoover Dam, Boulder City, Lake Mead and the Las Vegas Strip on their journeys to and from the Canyon. You can also hire a car and drive to these destinations. The Grand Canyon lies directly about 180 miles from Las Vegas but the drive is nearer 280 miles and takes about 6 hours. The helicopter and aeroplane tours go to the west rim of the canyon. The most popular site for tourists is the south rim where the visitors centre and lodging can be found. The north rim also offers exceptional views but is often much quieter. The south rim is open all year round as is the west rim but the northern rim is closed in winter. Hoover Dam is approximately 35 miles from Las Vegas on the way to the Grand Canyon. If you wish to stay over at the Grand Canyon in one of the popular lodgings then be sure to book as far in advance as possible as places fill up quickly during peak summer periods.
If you are looking for the ultimate adrenalin-rush during your holiday to Las Vegas then perhaps you should consider a Las Vegas sky dive. There can’t be many more spectacular locations than the beautiful Nevada desert backed by the magnificent Las Vegas skyline when viewed from a breathtaking 10,000 feet up! All the Las Vegas sky diving companies operate just outside the city, approximately a 20 or 30 minute drive from the Las Vegas Strip. Most of the companies operate a hotel pick-up which is included in the price. The mountains, desert and glittering cityscape combine to make Las Vegas one of the most exhilarating locations in the world to experience the incredible adrenalin-rush you get from sky diving!
How about going skiing whilst on your Las Vegas holidays? You may not believe it, but only 45 minutes north-west by car from Las Vegas you will find yourself at the Las Vegas Ski & Snowboard Resort on Mount Charleston in the Sierra Nevada mountains. The resort is typically open from the end of November to the beginning of April depending on snow levels and you can rent all clothing and equipment when you get there meaning you can save a bit of space in your suitcase!
Red Rocks National Park, located approximately 15 miles west of the city of Las Vegas, is a magnificent and awe-inspiring desert-scape offering a scenic drive with picnic areas plus hiking, biking, horse-riding and climbing trails. There is a wonderful visitor’s centre at the entrance to the park which offers trail maps and information on the fauna and flora to be found in the park and a history of the area. If you want to escape the glitz, glamour and the craziness of the Las Vegas Strip for a little peace, solitude and fresh air then pay a visit to the beautiful Red Rocks National Park, open year round.
