Mitsubishi To Unveil Hybrid Crossover And 70 MPG Small Car

Mitsubishi sales in America have been sinking for some time, to the point where the small Japanese automaker has killed off most of their lineup to make room for electric and hybrid vehicles. Mitsubishi will unveil two of these vehicles, a hybrid crossover and a small car that could get up to 70 mpg on Japan’s testing cycle.

I’ve got to give Mitsubishi credit for taking a big gamble when it comes to hybrid and electric vehicles, ending production of three of its best-known models (Galant, Eclipse, and Endeavor) to make way for a lineup of electrified, fuel-efficient vehicles. We already know that the Mitsubishi i will be America’s cheapest electric car, and now the Japanese automaker has revealed its next two vehicles; a hybrid crossover likely to be the next Outlander (currently named PX-MiEV) and a fuel-efficient Mirage that is lighter and features start-stop tech for an MPG of around 70 mpg (which is more like 40 mpg or so on the U.S. testing standard.)

The PX-MiEV will actually borrow components from the Mitsubishi i, including its large lithium-ion battery pack. But due to the heavier weight and all-wheel drive system, the PX-MiEV will only achieve around 31 miles of all-electric range. After that, a 2.0 liter generator recharges the battery pack, which powers two electric motors (one up front, one in the back.)
The gas engine can also help power the wheels, should the battery already be topped off or some extra “oomph” is needed to climb a steep hill. Mitsubishi hopes to achieve a fuel economy rating of 60 km/liter (140 mpg). Again, these numbers are on the much-different Japanese testing cycle, where a standard Toyota Prius is rated at 89.4 mpg. It should also be noted that this is likely a close-to-production version of what the actual vehicle will look like, as Mitsubishi first showed off a version of the PX-MiEV back in 2009.

Which brings us to Mitsubishi’s other offering, a new Mirage model that is lighter and more fuel efficient than previous models. It’s about 10% lighter than the Colt it replaces, and is powered by a 1.0 liter 3-cylinder engine with stop-start idle technology. Better aerodynamics will also help improve fuel economy to around 70 mpg on the Japanese cycle (about 40 mpg as the EPA flies.) The Mirage and Outlander/PX-MiEV are expected to hit streets in Japan and the U.S. in 2013, and will make their world debut at the Tokyo Auto Show in the coming weeks.

Still, Mitsubishi has its work cut out for it, especially here in America. But with bold steps, like a diesel-electric hybrid Lancer Evolution and these more “pedestrian” vehicles like the Mirage and Outlander, Mitsu could stage a late-game comeback. Will Mitsubishi’s new lineup help get it back on track, or contribute to its downfall as an independent automaker?

French firm Dassault Aviation has bagged the mega .4-billion (Rs 54,000 crore) contract to supply 126 medium multi-role combat aircraft (MMRCA) that will give the Indian Air Force — which is eagerly looking to replace its ageing fleets of MiGs and other fighter jets — a much-needed shot in the arm.

A fierce bidding battle was witnessed between Dassault’s Rafale and European consortium Eurofighter’s Typhoon to clinch what has been billed as the mother of all defence deals. Finally, it was the twin-engine, delta wing Rafale, which emerged as the lowest bidder today.

“The French firm Dassault Rafale has emerged as the lowest bidder and cheaper than its European rival EADS (maker of Eurofighter) in the tender and will be offered to supply the aircraft to the IAF,” top sources said.

They said the representatives of Dassault here were informed about the development in the morning and further negotiations on price will be held with them in the next 10-15 days.

The Rafale is used by the French Air Force and Navy and was deployed during the recent France-led NATO strikes on Libya. The final order could eventually go up to 200 aircraft as there is a provision for increasing the number of jets by 50 percent without any price hike. According to the Request for Proposal (RFP), the winner of the contract will have to supply 18 of the 126 aircraft to the Indian Air Force in 36 months in a fly-away condition from its facilities and the remaining would be produced at HAL facilities in Bangalore. The contract is likely to signed at the end of this fiscal in March or early next fiscal.

Dassualt Aviation’s Mirage-2000 fighter is already being used by the Indian Air Force for the past two decades.

Six companies, including American F-16 and F-18, Russian MiG 35, Swedish Saab Gripen alongwith Eurofighter and Dassault Rafale were in the race in the beginning. But in April last year, the Defence Ministry shortlisted Dassault and EADS, evicting the American, Russian and Swedish bids. The process was started with the issuing of a global tender in 2007 after which all the six contenders were subjected to extensive field evaluation trials by the Indian Air Force at several locations across the globe.

A defence ministry source said the Rafale was preferred because of lower costs, and the Indian Air Force’s familiarity with French warplanes such as the Mirage. “Unit-wise, the French plane is much cheaper than the Eurofighter. Moreover, the Indian Air Force, which is well equipped with French fighters, is favouring the French,” said the source. In the last six months, this is the third big defence deal bagged by French firms. India had recently signed a deal worth over $ 2.4 billion with Dassault Aviation and Thales for upgrading the 51 Mirage 2000 fighters. Earlier this month, the government also cleared a proposal to procure around 490 MICA air-to-air missiles for Mirage 2000 from French firm MBDA, which will cost $ 970 million. Also, a French company, DCNS, is building six scorpene submarines at the Mazagon Docks Mumbai under a Rs 20,000 crore deal. Another French company Safran supplies engines under brand name ‘turbomeca’ for the upgraded version of the Dhruv chopper used by the Army.

Vistalite Drums

Original varieties

The kits were initially available in clear, blue, green, red, amber, and yellow, with clear and blue being the most common. The company later introduced Rainbow Vistalites with multicolored shells – Tequila Sunrise (red, orange and yellow striped) was probably the most famous combination. Several other variations included bass drums without tom mounts (often referred to as “virgin” bass drums) and concert toms (toms without lug holes or a rim on the bottom of the shell). Green and red were eventually dropped due to poor sales. Translucent Smoke (a dark grey color), solid black, and solid white were added late during the Vistalite production run. Rainbow Vistalites were co-invented by Elvis Presley’s drummer Ronn Tutt. Tutt, however, tried his invention and was unimpressed, enough that he immediately went back to playing maple drums. Singer/drummer Karen Carpenter was fond of vistalites and can be seen playing them on her 70′s TV shows. Keith Moon of the Who, Nick Mason of Pink Floyd, Ron Bushy of Iron Butterfly and Billy Cobham played acrylic kits in the 70′s.

Tivoli Vistalite

In 1978, Ludwig created the Tivoli Vistalite by inserting small light bulbs into the shells. The kits were plagued by electrical problems – Bill Ludwig II is reported to have said that everything they made on Vistalite was lost on Tivoli. There were also problems with the shells cracking under the pressure of over-tightened lugs and exposure to freezing temperatures. The original Vistalite line was phased out due to declining sales, the rising cost of oil-based plastics.

Improved Vistalite

Ludwig reintroduced improved Vistalite drums in 2001, with the company enjoying decent sales of its John Bonham replica amber Vistalite kit. The shells are thicker, stronger, warmer sounding and more resonant than the originals.

In 2006, a multitude of drum companies like SONOR (X-Ray), Tama (Starclassic Mirage), RCI International (Starlite), Fibes (Crystalite), ddrum (Diode and Diaton), Zickos and Peace (Echoplasm), Kirchhoff Schlagwerk (Arctic series) now make acrylic drums thanks to a big increase in popularity since 2001. Custom drum companies have also seen a surge in demand.

Kirchhoff Schlagwerk of Germany, Sonor and Peace are the only current producers of seamless/extruded acrylic shells, Kirchhoff uses cast shells. These are the first since Pearl drums produced them in the 70′s. Sonor updated their lineup in 2006 to include the SQ2 (formerly designer) series. The promotional video refers to acrylic in terms of what a maple shell would sound like. Gold n Times acrylic shells are thicker and stronger than 70′s vistalites, but are glued and tabbed in the same manner. They are supplied to Ludwig, Tama, and custom drum makers. They are approximately 1/4″ (6mm) thick. Acrylic shells can be glued with adhesives like cyanocrylates. modern adhesives are superior to those available in the 1970s.

RCI Starlight acrylic shells are polymer “welded” at the seam, not tabbed. They are sold to drum parts and custom resellers under the title “Aqua bomb acrylic shells.” (“Atomic bomb” outside of North America.) According to RCI-Starlight international, claims vibration characteristics of their shells were tested and are superior to glued and tabbed shells.

Acrylic shells are welded by applying solvents like di/trichloretheleye to the ends of the acrylic sheet. The sheet is partially dissolved, and when the ends are placed togeather, the resultant bond is as strong, or stronger than the shell itself. Additionally, the seam is very thin.

The 2008 surge in oil prices will again raise the price of acrylic shells, and may again, endanger the acrylic market.

Popularity

Rockers and jazzmen alike enjoy the wide tuning range of acrylic drums, and the dry, but punchy and projecting sound. A criticism of Vistalite and acrylic shells in general is that some feel they sound brittle, artificial, and lack the complexity of their wood counterparts. It may be worth noting that some producers have been quoted as asking for Vistas as they are extremely forgiving in humidity variable environments, and seem to offer more consistent notes, session over session.

The re-issued Vistalites are approximately 30% louder with fewer overtones than wood or metal. With modern amplification and recording techniques, acrylic can sound very close to wood. In a 2007 issue of Modern Drummer magazine (www.moderndrummer.com), they stated of the Tama mirage acrylic drum kit: “When I close my eyes, I find it hard to believe it’s not a wood kit.” The reissues represent a very big change in not just the attitude of the media, but the improvement in resonance represented by modern acrylics and drumheads.

Many professional drummers used Vistalites or similar acrylic drums in the ’70s and ’80s. Jazzmen like Billy Cobham and Lionel Hampton, Bill Zickos were well known acrylic kit players in the 1970s.

Recently, drummer Mike Portnoy of the progressive metal group Dream Theater used a Tama drum company-built acrylic kit for a John Bonham tribute, and for parts of Dream Theater’s 2005 Octavarium cd and dvd. As of Summer, 2007 Portnoy now plays a Tama Mirage dubbed “the mirage monster” to support his 2007 tour. This underscores the resurgent popularity of these shells, and brings them into the public eye. Dominic Howard, drummer for the band Muse, is known to use Tama Mirage drums for live performances (but also regular Gretsch drums during some songs, as well as Tama Starclassic Bubinga drums and DW drums for recording). Drum tech Jeff Ocheltree included a segment on tuning the new Vistalite drums in his dvd “Trust your ears.” He describes them as having a very “live” sound. Originally, drummers favored single-ply drum heads with a center dot for these drums. But as Jeff Ocheltree describes, the sound improves with the use of two ply drum heads.

Austrian drummer/clinician Thomas Lang has toured with Sonor’s new designer x-ray acrylics to rave reviews for his playing, and for the sound of these drums.

Changing the overall attitude of drummers concerning the sound of acrylic drums has been a focus of the review media. In 2007 articles and reviews, the magazines gave unabashed praise for the look and sound of modern acrylic drums. Superlatives like “fat” and “warm” were liberally applied.
