The earlybird supposedly gets the worm and BetUS.com already is angling for wagers on which players will make the main event final table at the 2007 World Series of Poker.

By this time next month, offshore betting sites are expected to be awash with odds-to-win on poker’s most prestigious event, as officials at sponsoring Harrah’s Entertainment, Inc., are set to launch this year’s WSOP June 1, with the ,000 No-Limit Texas Hold’em Championship slated to run July 6-17.

Last year’s WSOP attracted 8,773 attendees, but many observers predict this season’s tournament may draw only one-fourth as many entrants because Harrah’s has severed ties with offshore books that aren’t official co-sponsors.

Las Vegas pro Phil Ivey, often referred to as the Tiger Woods of poker, leads BetUs.com’s final table roster at plus .00, with Canadian native Daniel Negreanu the second choice at plus .00.

Multi-gold bracelet winner and 1989 champion Phil Hellmuth, 2000 winner Chris “Jesus” Ferguson and Allen Cunningham, fourth place finisher in 2006, are plus .00.

“Great Dane” Gus Hansen and 1987-88 winner Johnny Chan check in at plus .00 and are followed by a group at plus .00 that includes 1998 champ Scotty Nguyen, 1995 winner Dan Harrington, Erik Seidel, Howard Lederer, Dave “Devilfish” Ulliott, John Juanda, Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi and Antonio “The Magician” Esfandiari.

Among a group posted at plus .00 are former champions Carlos “The Matador” Mortonson and Greg “Fossilman” Raymer.

The highly popular World Poker Tour has yet to produce a female champion and BetUS.com’s opening WSOP list includes just three women: longtime poker pros Annie Duke (plus .00) and Jennifer Harman (plus .00), along with actress and former Oscar nominee Jennifer Tilley, who won a gold bracelet in the 2005 ladies event.

Jamie Gold, the Hollywood talent agent who dominated last year’s main-event action, is plus .00, along with a lengthy list of others that includes former champions Huck Seed and Chris Moneymaker, veteran T.J. Cloutier, WPT TV host and 2006 Tournament of Champions winner Mike Sexton, Josh Arieh, David Williams, Chip Reese and Barry Greenstein.

Today, you would be hard-pressed to find a sports fan who doesn’t know about the World Series of Poker. With the growing popularity of Texas Hold’em over the past decade, many more people are interested in poker. The ensuing popularity has helped the WSOP to transcend into the mainstream, with its events being broadcasted on ESPN. Hundreds of celebrities and athletes converge on its main event, adding to its popularity.

It all started with a few men meeting at the Holiday Hotel and Casino in Reno for the first and only “Texas Gamblers’ Reunion.” Two men can be given credit for the event – Tom Moore and Vic Vickrey. Moore, a Texan, was part-owner of the Holiday Casino, and Vickrey was a gambling insider who had the vision and ambition to plant the seeds for what would become one of the biggest gambling events in the world.

The event took place in 1969. Participants were invited by Moore and Vickrey. Participants included Jimmy “The Greek” Snyder, Rudy “Minnesota Fats” Wanderone, Benny Binion, Doyle Brunson, “Amarillo Slim” Preston, Johnny Moss, and Puggy Pearson. All the players got to play in high-stakes cash games spread out over many days.

The following year, Moore and Vickrey decided not to have a poker gathering. One of the participants from the Gambler’s Reunion, Benny Binnion, thought the idea wasn’t worth giving up on. In 1970, Binion’s Horseshoe (Binion’s casino) played host to the inaugural World Series of Poker. The event was similar in structure to the Texas Gamblers Reunion, with a group of gamblers gathering for high-stakes poker over a several-day period.

In 1970, there were just 50 poker tables in Las Vegas and 70 tables in all of Nevada. Binion’s Horseshoe, which played host to the first World Series of Poker, did not even have a poker table. There were approximately 30 gamblers who crammed into the small room. The event received little press coverage and no interest outside of Las Vegas. The players would have never imagined they were playing an important part of poker history.

Followers of the World Series of Poker are undoubtedly familiar with the Main Event. Since 1972, the Main Event of the WSOP has been the ,000 buy-in no-limit Texas Hold’em tournament. The tournament offers the biggest prize and the winner is generally recognized as poker’s world champion.

The Main Event has been the major draw of the World Series of Poker. In 1970, however, no main event was held. Participants in the first World Series of Poker played in a series of cash games that included five-card stud, deuce to seven low-ball draw, razz, seven-card stud, and Texas hold ‘em. The winner of the event, Johnny Moss, did not win a single tournament. He was elected by his peers as the top performer for the event.

Forty years later, poker’s popularity has skyrocketed. As a result, people’s interest in the top poker players has intensified to the same degree. The event is now held in the much more cavernous RIO All-Suites Casino and Hotel. From humble beginnings, the event has turned into a money machine. There are 45 tournaments in all, combining to give out over 0 million in prize money. This makes the WSOP the richest of all sporting events.

The 2008 World Series of Poker begins this weekend at the Rio All-Suite Hotel in Las Vegas. The tournament is the highlight of the year for professional poker players, with over 50,000 players set to attend the biggest poker festival in the world.

This year’s tournament is certain to break all previous records, after both online and live tournament poker enjoyed massive growth over the past year. Fifty-five WSOP bracelets covering every conceivable poker format will be up for grabs, including eight ,000 World Championship events and eight ,000 World Championship events.

While the 2008 World Series of Poker has made all the right moves by making the tournament bigger and more accessible, some of the changes are causing a stir in the professional poker community, with amendments to the format of the main event causing the most controversy.

The WSOP Main Event Final

Unlike previous tournaments in which the final tables of the WSOP main event were taped by networks and broadcast at a later date, the WSOP main event has been organised to go live in 2008, with ESPN set to broadcast play at the final table live on primetime television.

However, it is not the live broadcast of the event that has put the game’s elite in a stew. Rather it is the bizarre decision to host the final table WSOP finale 117 days after the conclusion of the World Series of Poker festival.

This is equivalent to deciding to play the final of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa three months after the semi-finals in June of that year. The decision is certain to drain the event of both momentum and context, and given the way that luck runs in poker, could have a major impact on who emerges as the next WSOP champion.

ESPN and the WSOP organisers have attempted to rationalise the changes to the tournament by claiming that the 3 month break will give players the opportunity to study their opponents, receive coaching from professional players and work on their poker games.

Ironically, the person least likely to benefit from this move is the chip leader at the final table, whose game will be fundamentally undermined by the opportunity opponents will have to study and read his or her game.

While the ESPN broadcast is certain to be an unqualified success, chances are it won’t actually benefit the game itself. The most seasoned professional players are subscribing in rapidly increasing numbers to the view that the WSOP main event has evolved into nothing more than a loud, glitzy, over-subscribed poker lottery.

broadcasts of 24 of the WSOP Live tournaments. Via the two sites, fans from around the world will be able to view the action in almost real-time.

Commissioner Pollack commented, “We are proud to provide the culminating action of so many prominent events to a worldwide audience in real-time. This online initiative will
complement our spectacular television package on ESPN and deliver even more of this year?s milestone WSOP to fans who want the most immediate coverage possible.”

For US Players ESPN will be broadcasting 32 hours of action on television, however this will be be limited to two bracelet events, the special anniversary ,000 No Limit
Texas Hold?em tournament and the Main Event. It will also air two non-bracelet events, the WSOP Champions Invitational and the Charity event – Ante Up for Africa charity tournament.

The streaming video feed of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) will feature other highly prestigious tournaments on the schedule, including four of the ,000 World Championships,
the Ladies? Championship, and the ,000 HORSE tournament.

This news will allow thousands of people to see the events as they unfold in Las Vegas on the internet and is a huge step forware not only the WSOP, but also for the players and
fans themselves.
